Generating Randomness

Earlier this week, I went around hitting the “Random post” button at various blogs. I had such a good time with it that I thought, “I need to make an easy way for people to do this on my blog.”

I needed a button– and I had my heart set on a DRD (Diagnostic Repair Drone) from Farscape. In my mind, we’d ask him to fetch us an archive post and he’d scuttle off to do so. Obviously, since it’s a still button, there would be no scuttling in real life. Only in my imagination.

Once I turned my favorite DRD into a little archive-fetching bot, I asked Dave if he wanted a button, too.  He did, but he wanted a Delorean.

One thing led to another, and now I have a little stash of these buttons, so I thought I’d share.  Feel free to grab any, if you’d like one, though they heavily err on the side of geek. They’re also smallish for most themes because I made it friendly for my theme which has skinny margins.  Of course, if you want a tweak, all you have to do is let me know and I’m happy to oblige as normal.

To set it up, you just put the image on your blog and link it to your URL followed by “?random” instead of a page. For example, mine links to:  https://rarasaur.wordpress.com/?random   When someone clicks on it, it takes them to a random post from my archives.

* CardCastlesInTheSky made some fabulous buttons to share, too! Check them out here: http://cardcastlesinthesky.wordpress.com/2013/08/16/youre-refreshingly-random-today/

* UPDATE, since I think this might help anyone who wants to know how to put the image into an image widget:

This is how my image widget looks with my randomizer in it.

Happy randomizing!

Do you ever click on the “Random Post” button when you visit blogs? Can you come up with another one of these archive button themes that I can steal for my button collection?

Did you click on ol’ 1812 in my side bar yet? He’s adorable and happy to help you with all your post-fetching needs.

      1. And I never thought about it. I should , now. 🙂 Thank you , Rara, for sharing . 🙂 And hey, all those buttons are so pretty.. 🙂 My most favorite is ” Click here and a good post will find you”..:)

        1. It’s a play on “Never give up, and good luck will find you” from the Neverending Story. Well, it started as a play on that, but it went it’s own direction. 🙂

The random button thing isn’t super critical or anything, but it sure is fun… you get a cool perspective on the blogs you follow by clicking the button! 🙂

          1. I loved that deep meaning with randomness of the posts, Rara. That’s why it is the most favorite and then the “run away with me” is the next favorite. I have to figure out how to create a button. 🙂 I forgot html , almost.:)
You’re the idea queen plus of course queen of the heart. 🙂 Thank you once again. ** Pretty excited after reading your cool post**

            1. Thank you, Archita! 🙂 As far as the HTML… the easiest thing to do is to create an image widget, and just fill in the information. 🙂 Good luck, and feel free to email me if you need help. xo!

  1. That is totally cool. I’m going to do it! I just can’t make up my mind which button. I have a terrible time making small decisions. The big ones are easier.

      1. Please excuse the typos above-I couldnt see what I was writing. CeCe, a fellow blogger has been trying to help me. In the past several others have. I cannot get a button on my home page a lot of times. It is hit or miss. I have had people tell me different ways to do it, sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t. WordPress does not seem to have any directions. Could you fill out a fake form for m to copy on the button that says “Click” Click Click” and see if I can get it to work-write down what I do? I have so much trouble on these things that should be simple. Thanks again. beebeesworld

  3. These buttons are awesome, so much better than the simple random post clicky thingy!! I’m going to steal one, I just can’t decide which one yet!! What a neat thing, Rara! I’m off to click 1812 to see where he takes me!

          1. Ok, I put one on my site! I think it’s perfect, it’s the steampunk bug but I named him Rarasaur’s Random PostPunkBug, I wanted to somehow give the create of his creation to you but can’t link him to you and my random posts 😉 Thank you for sharing not just the idea but the buttons! You, as always, are awesome! 🙂

    1. 🙂 Aww, thanks… though I didn’t really do anything but make some little buttons. Still, it makes it fun to go around and browse random posts… I’m definitely enjoying digging through the archives of WordPress. 😀

  4. This is great! Another awesome idea from the awesome Rara!
The only problem is I’m torn by my choice of button. Dr Who, Star Trek, Stargate or Arnie?
I’ll have a think before making the plunge I think.
    Thank you 🙂

    1. 🙂 I know. I’m glad I was so firmly in the Farscape camp, because if I hadn’t found 1812… I would have been stuck between the others. Of course, with your skills, you could make a dralidoodle-time-warp button. 🙂

I’ve never clicked on random post before, I guess because I tend to always just check out everyone’s latest stuff, but these are very cool!

    1. 😀 Thanks, Rohan! 🙂 I had fun making them. I do like hitting “random post” over at people’s blogs, especially if I pop by for a visit and they don’t have something new on hand. You get a wider image of someone if you don’t move consecutively through their world, I’ve found. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by! 😀

  6. Wow! I didn’t know such things exist.. Random post sounds interesting! I clicked on 1812 and brought me to “Why blogs disappear” and something like “Why do people blog”, sorry if I got the title wrong as I couldn’t trace back the blog because of the randomness… but it’s awesome! I shall make one for my blog too.. maybe with some children theme button!

    1. 😀 I hope you enjoyed your stroll through my bloggy past, Lynette. To steal a button, you can either download one (by right-mouse clicking, and saving it to your desktop), and then upload it to your media file where you’ll be able to see the URL from the file… or you can just copy the URL (starts with HTTP, ends with JPG) that I have under each photo. Take that code and drop it into an image widget where it says IMAGE URL. Then, put your link in the appropriate link box. I hope that helps!

  7. I had no idea this “random” thing even existed! I am a total newbie and I do not even know how to put buttons in my margins. 😦 Anyway, I think it is a brilliant idea – and if I can figure out how to do it – I will totally borrow one! 🙂

    1. Yayyy! I love Jules Verne… well, I love so many authors that I’m basically a nutcase, but I had to limit myself, haha… Everyone has a random button (from the top toolbar, if you hover over the site name), but most people don’t know how to click there. 🙂 A button makes it easier, I think. 🙂

  10. HIya rara, I tried it, I clicked on the 1812 button, then rightclicked save url, put it in widgets (Image) and linked to amonika.wordpress.com/?random. It just shows the title Random and a windoweything on my blog. What am I doing wrong? I can’t get the images for Society 6 and redbubble to work either. Of course I am actually a dinosaur, which may explain it. You are great.

    1. 🙂 It looks like the JPG isn’t the right URL. Where it says IMAGE URL, you need to put in the one that starts http:// and ends with an image extension, like .jpg, .png, or .gif. I see that for the randomizer, you put this one in:
      https://rarasaur.wordpress.com/2013/08/12/generating-randomness/#jp-carousel-9819

as opposed to the one for 1812, which is: https://rarasaur.files.wordpress.com/2013/08/randompost1.jpg

That should fix it! 🙂 It’s probably the same problem for Society6 and RedBubble, but I’d need links to know for sure. 🙂

      1. I don’t hink WordPress likes Society 6!! It won;t allow me to embed this in the text widget

I looked on help and it said it didnt allow javascript. , I tried the image widget with the banner link
        http://society6.com/account/banner
and it won’t display, but it does something because if youclick on the sidebar which has the word society 6 on it , it takes you there. Bizarre, I don’t understand any of this stuff tho;!

        1. Are you trying to link to S6 in general, or a specific page? The link you posted isn’t a direct link or an image link, so that’s probably the problem. 🙂

You’ll know that you have the image URL right when, if you click on the link, it takes you to a page where the only thing on it is the image. It generally ends with image extensions like .jpg or .gif or .png or .tif. 🙂
