My Spirit Rawrs!

rarasaur, rawr

We all have a dinosaur deep within us just trying to get out.
– Colin Mochrie

Today I was asked to name my spirit animal, and I said dinosaur. For the purposes of group participation, my spirit animal was rejected. I need to come up with a non-extinct, non-mythical animal by next week. I found some online quizzes, but wasn’t impressed with the results.

Any ideas for me?
What is your spirit animal?

    1. I do love crocodiles… to see… but they just seem so much more lonely than I imagined dinosaurs to be… πŸ™‚ What’s your animal? πŸ™‚

      1. This one seems to be top choice! πŸ˜€ They’re not quite as dramatic as I’d like, but at least they’re dinoriffic… πŸ˜€ Thanks for the ideas, guys. What are your animals??

  1. Dog has always been mine. It’s boring, but it is. Other animals with significant messages in my life have been the crow and great blue heron. Look up animal totems instead and that might yield more clues for the Rara.

    1. Thank you, Tawny.. πŸ™‚ Dave is very often “connected” to crows, as well. πŸ™‚ I like dog-people and crow-people. πŸ˜€ Thanks for the tip! It yielded a few different quizzes which I’m doing now. πŸ™‚

  2. Another reptilian sort? Salamander, newt, gecko, turtle? What results did the quiz give you?

I am torn between a snowy owl or a penguin. I love birds in general, but these two especially. I can’t choose…is it possible to have two spirit animals?

    Like

    1. The quizzes yielded the same animals a few times– the hawk, the otter, the fox, and one quiz said deer. I like turtle! Salamanders and the others sound too squishy. I don’t feel like I have a squishy soul. πŸ˜€

According to this group, you’d have to pick just one… but according to life, you can have tons of spirit animals! πŸ˜€

  3. My spirit animal is a lion, which I know is such a stereotype, but it is what it is…

My wife, an artist, drew me this fantastic sketch of a roaring lion, and I try to match on a daily basis the ferocity and bravery of such a powerful animal. Not that I ever do, but it’s a goal, and goals are good. (Except when they make you miserable, of course, but I digress…)

My spirit animal is a lion, and I think it’s ridiculous that yours can’t be a dinosaur. Tell me who I need to deal with, and I’ll try get all lion-like with them and straighten ’em out… : )

    1. Haha, thank you, Stan. πŸ˜€ I make enough waves just by existing, so I tend to be pretty go with the flow in regards to rules, haha. Ooh, that gives me an idea… maybe I should go with blue whale… though I’m not really a water person.

I like that your spirit animal is a lion! πŸ˜€ I also like that we both have artsy spouses and roars in our heart! Rawr! πŸ˜€

  4. Crocodiles, alligators, monitor lizards, and komodo dragons remind me most of dinosaurs. Self examine your personality and choose the one that best fits. I think the crocodile has the most liberated personality of character in literature than the others.

    Like

    1. The liberated personality is my problem with most of the reptiles of today. I feel like they don’t really exude personality. This really isn’t that important, haha, but I have trouble laying claim to a spirit animal I don’t connect to! Silly, right?! πŸ™‚ What’s your spirit animal??

      1. I used to think of myself as bird…sort of soaring free and uninhibited, not really tameable. More like a falcon bird of prey. Since I have remarried and grown older I am seeing myself as more of a squirrel, industrious, chipper, more cuddly and cute and a lot more nutty. I have gone from predator to prey. Oh No! What Next?

  5. How can they turn down your spirit animal for being extinct? It’s a SPIRIT animal! Even if it’s no longer physically alive in body, it’s SPIRIT lives on… in you!

There’s only one logical solution to this problem: you need to clone a dinosaur. I realize dinosaurs could be dangerous to the existence of humankind as we know it, so maybe on a remote island somewhere, in a heavily fortified compound. Wait, this sounds familiar…

My spirit animal’s a duck, for various reasons.

    Like

    1. I agree, haha! πŸ˜€ To all points! I edited myself into Jurassic Park in the picture, haha, why not create it!! I love your spirit animal is a duck– that’s lovely!

I agree that my spirit animal should count… when they told me it didn’t, I felt like that girl in Kindergarten cop… “I’m not a policeman, I’m a princess!”

  6. I think a spirit animal is as a spirit animal does – Dinosaur should not be excluded based simply on the fact that, in it’s primary form, it is extinct! But, if you must absolutely choose another one, Eagle was the first thing that came to mind. I’m not sure why – save any hobbits and dwarves recently? πŸ™‚

I did the spirit animal naming thing when I was a kid, and mine were wolves and snakes. Not a fan of the snakes, but they do have a sort of Majesty about them.

    Like

  7. Hold on. Your spirit animal doesn’t count due to extinction? What dino-poop! I’d go with komodo dragon because they are quite dinosaurish.

I don’t know if what I have is a spirit animal, I call him my dream guardian, he just started showing up in my nightmares (I had terrible nightmares and night terrors from early childhood through mid-teens. Occasionally I still do.) when I was about 8 and hangs about in my dreams battling the bad ones and making sure they don’t come back. Oddly he never went away once I grew up, which is cool in the fact that I’m never fighting alone in a nightmare πŸ˜‰ He’s a black panther.

But really? A dinosaur is a perfectly good spirit animal! I’d say being extinct a dino is even better qualified to be a spirit animal!

    Like

    1. Haha, “What dino-poop!” might be my new most favorite expression. πŸ˜€ I love the black panther as a spirit animal for you… and doubly love that yours trusts you enough to show you his shape. πŸ˜€

    1. Haha! Pandas are amongst my favorite animals, partially because of the zen they possess… unfortunately, I’m not a zen person! πŸ˜€

  9. Horse shoe crabs are living dinosaurs. That sounds rather judgemental to veto someone’s spirit animal because it’s extinct. Thespirits are still there. According to a shaman I visited mine is a Siberian tiger.

      1. I was going to say the same, horseshoe crab, which is actually more closely related to a spider than a crab. Their blood is used to test medicine because it so closely matches our blood. They are rather docile animals.

  10. Wield your fist, woman. A dinosaur is perfectly acceptable as a spirit animal…. However, given that it is extinct, I am not sure how that bodes for youe future…

    1. Haha! I might, if it was important, but it’s just one of those unavoidable groups like housing associations. I should have just said the first other animal that came to mind, but I panicked about laying claim to an animal I didn’t like… haha, oh the things that worry me. πŸ™‚

  11. Ridiculous! What do you mean spirit animals can’t be extinct!! O.O
I vote for dragon πŸ˜€ Awesome beautiful animals they are too!! AND I’m sure it’s closer to dinosaur looking …
    I don’t know what mine is 😦 I’m hoping it’s a wolf! but someone did mention dolphins..hehe.

BTW, is that you in the picture? You’re beautiful πŸ™‚

  13. Kangaroos look kind of like dinosaurs. Aside from the whole green thing, I mean. So do some birds. Herons. Ostriches. Emus. I have NO idea what my spirit animal is, but if I could just choose, it would be a wolf. Or a ferret.

    1. A lot of people like wolves… but why the ferret, if I can ask? πŸ˜€ I actually really like the idea of a kangaroo… I’ve moved it to my top 5 list. πŸ˜€

  17. Who makes up these stupid rules? (sorry jet-lag) Honestly, what do you mean you have to have just one and one which isn’t extinct or isn’t mythical? I never give in to convention and figure that, if I even ever consider a spirit animal, that spirit animal would surely have to change according to how my spirit changes, so wolf one day, hummingbird the next, and banshee the third. (what do you mean banshee isn’t an animal?)

How about the chameleon, they are versatile, adapting to many situations and kind of cute to as reptiles go πŸ™‚

  20. I totally see you as a big, strong bird myself. Like a an eagle or a hawk or something just as awesome. (& Hey, there were flying dinos! So, you never know!)

I say this because you have a strong spirit that seems to soar above but yet knows how to sit back & observe as well.

I see myself as a cat because I seem to have “9 lives”. Sofia Siberia said she I have a butterfly spirit, though. Either way, they’re both equally beautiful creatures. πŸ™‚

  22. Spirit animals are usually an animal that tends to show up a lot in your life, whether in photos, in person, dreams, movies, etc. It’s an animal that you feel particularly drawn to. Who’s the idiot who made this quiz? lol

    Like

    1. Haha! Ah, it’s one of those social-obligation work groups. For all I know, they’re trying to match people up and figure that a dinosaur doesn’t match things. I’m sure they think people will just say something and move on… they don’t know I’ll agonize about my decision till the deadline, haha. πŸ˜€ I just can’t lay claim to a spirit I don’t feel… luckily, there’s some good ideas in the comments. I just need to learn more about these animals. πŸ™‚

  23. This is a lovely conversation. I agree with the comments that it is stupid to exclude dinosaur. Maybe you should find yourself another group, the one you are with is a bit limiting. Who would want to limit a spirit? I was thinking about my own totem or spirit animal some time ago. I think I’ll start a zoo.

    Like

    1. I agree… this conversation is so lovely! Pretty ideas and wonderful people. I love the idea of spirit animals.

Unfortunately the group is less a “for fun” thing and more a “for social requirement” thing, πŸ™‚ Any group of my choosing would have no problem with a dinosaur spirit animal, haha. πŸ˜€

Did you come up with a bevy of spirit animals? Enough to fill a zoo? πŸ™‚ Did any pop out as the closest fit??

    1. The meerkat as a spirit animal is a wonderful thing. They’re also so observant! πŸ™‚ It suits you very well! πŸ˜€

Yep, they’re all kinds of silly. Luckily, I am required to have very few interactions with them each year! πŸ™‚

  27. I’m going to suggest a bird – aren’t they pretty close to their dino ancestors? And that way you could get to be…what was it you said once…green and orange and noisy? Something smart, lively and vibrant that flits and flashes through the canopy with lots to say πŸ™‚
I think I’d have to have a whole mix of spirit animals. Quite cat, but then again I spend far more time thinking of others’ needs than any cat I’ve met, and I don’t do even the metaphorical equivalent of torturing small furry animals. But I ace on luxuriously stretching and lying about doing nothing soaking up gentle warmth.
Once when I was 20 I was with a big group of Finnish people playing the ‘what animal are you’ game and felt very hurt when they said ‘you are that creature with long spindly legs and spots on your back’. It took them a while to convey that they meant a fawn, which wasn’t so bad after all! πŸ™‚

    1. You have a fantastic memory! πŸ˜€ Thank you for the suggestion. I think we’re all probably a mix of spirit animals, though I went totally blank when asked to pick something that wasn’t a dinosaur, haha. πŸ˜€

You’re #1! At least, you’re happiest when in charge. You lead with courage, integrity, and compassion. People gravitate to your confidence and charisma, and they feel safe in your care. But be careful not to believe your own hypeβ€”stubborn pride is every Bear’s downfall.

  29. How about dragons? πŸ™‚ They’re my spirit animal – and according to Chinese astrology, I was born in the year of the dragon. Its non-existent now I know, but I can’t help feel they did exist sometime earlier. The evidence? Mythological stories across the globe talk about them – from Europe to Asia. There’s even a Tamil word for it. So why not? πŸ™‚ I remember watching something Dragons on the Discovery Channel related to the possibility of them existing. But even if they do not exist, Dragons rock anyway πŸ˜€

    1. The idea that dragons really existed is one of my favorites, and I can make a pretty powerful argument towards it! Still, even if they’re not mythological, they’re definitely extinct… so this group would veto it, haha. πŸ˜€ Still, they rock! I love people born in the year of the dragon. I’m a rat, and Dave’s a monkey… and we’ve both noticed how well Rats, Dragons, and Monkeys get along. πŸ˜€

  30. I’m with the camp that think dino should TOTALLY COUNT, but since it doesn’t how about a coelacanth? They are as old as the dinosaurs (some say older) and still exist. So there.

I actually had my spirit animal done once by someone (who claimed she) was a shaman. My spirit animal is an eagle, which is why I tend to flip out a little when I see one in real life. I always think the universe is trying to tell me something important.

    Like

    1. An eagle– awesome! πŸ™‚

Ooh, that would be spooky– to suddenly see your spirit animal face to face. This brings me to another method of choosing or finding my spirit animal…

  31. But I don’t understand. If it’s a “spirit” animal, how does dinosaur not work? I guess you could say komodo dragon. Sort of a dinosaur. Besides, I think dinosaur is the only answer you could give. Makes sense to me.

As for my spirit animal, I’m fairly certain it’s a peacock. You see, I used to drive over this pass through Idaho frequently while coming back and forth from college. And twice, in the middle of winter I swear I saw a peacock right at the top of the pass just on the side of the road. I remember thinking, “What the what? A peacock? Here!?”

What other answer could it be besides spirit animal?

      1. Yay, thank you Jae! The photofilters help with the brightness– my teeth are positively gleaming, haha. πŸ˜€

You know, peacocks follow my husband around everywhere he goes. We don’t even go to the San Diego Zoo anymore because it’s so awkward… I wonder if that’s maybe a better choice for his spirit animal, too… you guys must be two of a feather, which means you’re most definitely good people. πŸ˜€

  32. Non-extinct and non-mythical? What? Such harsh rules… dragon, of course, would have been my answer… Alas, I am forced to go with Cheetah: fast, efficient, and therefore often appearing lazy, loners (but not their whole lives), and a cat – so, awesome!
I think I’d go with something like an Owl for you – a bird (descended from dinosaurs), plus we’ve already discussed that you’d love to be able to fly, you seem to have a panache for the nocturnal, and you are invariably on a quest for knowledge – that all screams “owl” to me.

    Like

    1. Cheetah, awesome! πŸ˜€ I see how that would be a great fit for you. πŸ™‚

    “Dinosaur.”
