a birthday game

“I’ll Rawr If I Want To” – by GreenEmbers (http://greenembers.wordpress.com)

There are about 15 million reasons why instigating an interactive blog game is a really bad idea right now. All the best blogging books would say it’s bound to be ineffective. Aside from the rules I always break — like not having a niche, and using the titles I like over the titles that make sense to The Reader– I’ve also been an inconsistent little blogger of late.

Will I post in the morning, or at night?
Will I post at all today? Will there be pictures?
Will I respond to your comment immediately, or in 3 days, or in 15?
Will I change themes again and again?
Will I stalk you and binge read your posts?  Or act surprised when I see you again?

No one knows!
Least of all me.

I like to think of it as being as Blogger of Mystery, rather than a blogging dinosaur who hasn’t gotten her head on straight yet.

In the middle of chiding myself for not writing or responding with any regularity, I read a comment posted by A, asking me for a picture of something native to my area– something so very “Southern California” that you couldn’t mistake it.

And that’s when I thought of the best birthday present I could possibly imagine–

A game!

Here’s how it works:

  • Pick something.
  • Provide your name or whatever link you want me to use.
  • I will take a picture of it, or with it.  If you pick a poem or story, I could read a piece of it in a video.  I’ll make sure your name shows up in the picture or video so we can keep tabs on my progress.
  • I have no idea how long it’ll take to accomplish this, but when I’m done, I’ll post all about it.  It’ll be fun and exciting, and amazing.  Either that, or mildly interesting.  I promise.

As an example, I picked pomegranate for my own word.  Why?

No one knows!

Blogger of Mystery!

So, what say you, oh Best Beloveds?

Do you break any well-worn blogging rules? How do you celebrate your birthday?

And most importantly–

What’s the word?

  1. the word is sunflower. use litebeing as my moniker.
If this makes you happy, let’s play a game.
BTW, I do not know who you are comparing yourself to, but you blog more regularly than many bloggers that I know.
Do not judge yourself too harshly. Life is way too short and you are having a birthday 🙂

    love, litebeing ❤

    1. It does make me happy, thank you for playing! And, unfortunately, I compare myself to myself. It keeps me on my toes! And lately, knocks me flat on my behind… but I keep getting up, so I count that as a win. 😀 Plus, even when I’m way behind, I’m having fun… that counts for something big, right? 😀

Sunflower is an excellent word. Thank you.

  2. I’ll be celebrating my birthday in a couple of weeks (Sept 12th to be exact 😉 ) I will be telling people my true age! Well, maybe. I’m old so who cares, eh? LOL
    I love your idea of a party….
I usually break rules on a regular basis, that’s why there are rules, right? to break!
    My word for you is…..
LEMON! Any way you want to use it, picture, poem, story, your choice. And Happy Birthday!

  3. I think you blog just fabulously! 😀

My word is cupcake! Appropriate for the birthday, I think…and cupcakes are just awesome. The sillier, the better, of course. 😀

My birthday is on Friday, so maybe you should eat two cupcakes to celebrate both of our birthdays! 😀 (I promise to eat an extra one in honor of yours, too!) ❤

  4. Blogging rules? I kick blogging rules under the bed and forget about them. (If only I were a dinosaur, I’d sweep them away with a mighty blow of my tail. But I’m not.) As for my birthday, I shock my friends by baking my own birthday cake. But I have an excuse, really I do. You see, if I didn’t make something, somebody would go kindly buy me a bakery cake so I wasn’t overlooked, and that would be very thoughtful…but I don’t much like bakery cakes. And there are so many intriguing cake recipes that I’d never have an excuse to try if I didn’t have birthdays!

It’s my birthday (no, not today) and I’ll bake if I want to. So there.

And while I wait to get another year older, Rawra needs words. Hmmm, what’s my word…FOREST. That’s it, “forest”. Nice and shady and variable and green.

    Best wishes to you,

    Forest Sharon.

    1. I love it! A birthday as a means of cake exploration– discovery is a beautiful way to celebrate! Thank you for the word, Sharon, I have a feeling it’s going to take me on a grand adventure… 😀

  5. Happy Birthday! As to rules and games…well I am not consistent but I would love to give a word.
My word would be rose. So much there noun, verb, symbolism, all that…a rose by any other name would smell as sweet…and generally and pleasing smell. 🙂

  6. Rules, Smules. Who needs em?

And to keep up the rhyme, I’ll say mules. Of course some day when you do answer, I will have no idea what either of us is talking about. But that might make it more fun.

I’m too old to make much of my birthdays — so I have a nice dinner and cake.

Happy Birthday Rara. glad you’re free to celebrate it.

    1. By the time I get around to posting this, you, me & the mule will be utterly baffled. 😀 A nice dinner and cake sounds like a lovely tribute to a birthday… because, hey, it’s tinged with freedom and that’s something pretty glorious, right? Thank you for the word, Elyse!

  7. Ohhh birthday time!! My word is…magic. You probably would’ve guessed that, huh? Haha. I don’t like to follow the rules myself. My birthday is in October, not sure how I’ll celebrate it yet. The last few years were low-key as I didn’t want to do much. I do loooooove to bake though haha 🙂 xo

    1. Thank you, Tahira! I hope you have a bake-full birthday when it does come around… you’ve been so busy you deserve a big celebration full of twirling and glittery magic! 😀 Thank you for your word. It is beautiful.

  8. Hey you 🙂
In celebration of birthdays, (yours, my son’s and some relatives, mine later on, etc.) my word is
    M o o n.
Use it however you like, but you know I’d love something visual. 😉
I wish you the happiest of birthdays coming up.
    Sending love your way.

& P.S. Rule breaker or not, birthday games are always fun. 🙂 No matter our age. 😉 ❤

      1. I look forward to seeing what you come up with for jackfruit! I used it this summer in a recipe that was supposed to taste like a vegetarian version of barbecued pork. It didn’t taste anything like meat but it was really good and introduced me to jackfruit. I had seen it in India but thought it was something completely different than what it is.

  9. I choose “bees” or just one “bee” either is fine, cause I’m just super easy going today like that 😉 . Ivy just asked what was up, she told me we should choose “love”. As she says, “because, you know, we love Rara.” Proud mama right here, proud mama.

  10. I’m in a very cheeky vengeful destroy le former lover mode.. this is not a good idea to pick something. I’d have you say absurd slightly indecent things. Must wait.. till sanity kicks in.. at least for a while.

    1. Sounds interesting. I must admit I’d be curious to see some non-G-rated picks, but in the interest if discouraging Vengeful-Tookles (vengeance causes wrinkles) …. *hugs* you are loved. And nothing someone-who-doesn’t-deserve-your-love does matters. ❤

          1. I woke up thinking le oopsie and then looking for a better word. But I got no more in my ceramic head. Turd is the only word that doesn’t hurt 🙂 eskimo-pinky-swear-promises are very powerful. It must work ❤

  11. I really don’t follow the rules for having a super popular blog and I’m pretty okay with the small community I’ve created.
For the game, I’m a little hazy about exactly where you are in SoCal so my word(s) may not work: I love Joshua Tree National Forest and its namesake tree. I know Joshua Trees are around some of Southern CA but not all. If there are any near enough to be convenient, that’s my word: Joshua Tree

    Liked by 2 people

    1. I don’t either. I read them, though… because all-things-blog are fascinating to me, but then I inevitably go my own way. “Have a clear tagline” pales in comparison to “Have a tagline that says sounds like a RAWR!” 😉 Oh well. Our blogs are thriving in a way that is meaningful to us, and that’s what matters.

Joshua Tree! Perfect. I have the perfect thing for this, though it may not be exactly what you have in mind… 😉 Yay! Thank you for playing!

  12. I’ve been loving those poems you’ve been posting on IG – you have the best reading voice. ❤ For really.
So my word is "strong", and if possible I'd like you to read a piece of a poem that makes you feel stronger, however you define that.
You can use whichever name you'd like for me.:) you know all of them.

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Thank you! I feel a little bad about posting all the reading videos… like I’m flooding people’s photo stream with snippets of literature, ha! But, yay for an excuse to do more! I have plenty in mind! Thank you for playing, E!

    1. Thank you, Cindy! It’s so great to BE back. 😀 Do you have a word for me? Otherwise I’ll go with “Attack” because that sounds interesting, haha! 😀

  13. My word is…Amigurumi!

Any name works for me. Well, any of the ones that are usually assoicated with me, that is 😀

    Happy Birthday! 😀 ❤ ❤ ❤

(blogging rules…I guess I just need to get back to blogging…and I don't do anything for my birthday!)

    1. I’m going with Punky because because. 🙂 Thank for the birthday wishes, and the word, and for playing! We’re going to have to do something for your birthday one of these days because we should celebrate you. ❤

As to blogging rules… pfft. We make our own rules! Mad Max style!

    1. Yay! Thank you for playing. And of course I used your picture. I’ll be using it for every birthday in the future of all eternity because it’s phenomenal. 🙂

What site should I link to? I’m using index cards, so I might be able to fit two…

  14. Rules? There are rules???? Why don’t I know this?????? (Probably because I would not follow, aka ‘break them’). 🙂

Birthday ? Happy day of birth Rara!

My word is FLABBER. And you can call me anything you want. 🙂

  15. I am not even sure I know blogging rules. I do love Birthday games and particularly dinosaur birthday games that make YOU happy! My original word Noelle chose, so I choose HOPE for mine. ❤️

    Liked by 1 person

    1. These types of games make me very happy, Tawny… I think they’re how I fell in love with blogging. 😀 Hope is a fantastic word and I know just what to do with it, hurrah! Thank you for being a part of this world. *hugs*

  16. Blogging rules, branding and all such things make my skin crawl. Such limits are no fun. My word was going to be humble – but that’s pretty hard to take a picture of so how about tumble instead? Or crumble? See, breaking the rules already. 🙂

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Mamasaur always says you have to know the limits to trample right past them into the impossible, but other than that, my interest in such things is fleeting. 😀 I will write down each of the words and see what comes up– something frightfully wondrous I hope!

What name should I use “CompostingWords”, or do you go by a nickname, too?

      Liked by 1 person

  17. This is quite an awesome game you have here. I would like to play, if I may.

    The word: smile

Also, in the spirit of the post (and being completely random), I am okay with whatever name and medium you wish to use. I hope a smile is an acceptable birthday present, but it might be okay because there are many wonderful things other people have posted here. Have a happy, safe, and joyous birthday!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Hurrah! Of course you may play, I am thrilled you decided to join the festivities! And smile is such a joyous word… hurrah for that, as well. 🙂 Thank you for the wishes, and for your participation.

  18. Happy birthday! I don’t know much about those supposed blogging rules either. I also don’t know if I really know you well enough for a birthday game. I know your story well through some of our mutual friends, but I know I rarely comment. If you feel so inclined, my word would be “fox”. Name is either my blog name or just Pen. Either works. Doesn’t much matter to someone like me.

I hope you are doing well.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Pen is a wonderful moniker, and Fox is a fabulous contribution, and I could think of nothing I like better than finding a friend through friends who is kind enough of spirit to join in random festivities. So, I am a happy camper and doing very well– thank you for asking. And thank you for playing!

  19. My word is “Soya Curry!” Even if it is not technically one word it is one item… I picked it cause I want to see you find it locally. If it is not a regular item for you then I can send you the recipe… (though you’ll have to convert down from portions for 300 – hehehe)
    Rules for success
    are for the average joe,
    but you are Rarasaur!
you don’t need them to grow.
    Just type your desire
    and your fans are waiting
    so never worry about that
    winding road you’re taking.
Sometimes poems just come out, and I just let them come, just because…

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Ooh, I’m totally going to find it locally! As to poems just appearing, it’s only right to let them. Stopping them would be like stopping a rainbow! And as to the one that specifically just sprouted in my comments section thanks to your brain… I am grateful to it, and humbled by it. Thank you, Sreejit. 🙂

  20. My word is: cat

Cats make me feel like every day is my birthday. Well, maybe not every day, but they make me laugh. Spread the joy.

Name? Just use mine and my blog or just use the name of your favorite cat.

  21. Southern California? Hmmm…how about Giant Sequoia. Well, technically it’s two words, but I just love them. I imagine them as having a huge heart – much like you dear Rara. They have had many, many birthdays and that is what I wish for you xxx

  22. I hope you’re having a beautiful birthday, Rara. My word is coffee because it is the first thing I look forward to every morning and even though you can call me anything you like here in your blogging home you might like to know my name is Lisa.

  23. Dearest Sparkly One,

Wishing you an incredibly happy birthday full of *twinklysparklygoodness* and silver linings to settle into a backdrop which will always provide contrast to the light (because that’s life). I hope your game and your day and whichever rules you choose to use or loose, go WELL, and that you find ways to feel the love extended towards you from your Real, and from this World Between the Wires.

I tend to think that rules are there for a reason, and there are ways they make us safe, or stop us from disappointing people too much. I also find that I can only break them and get away with it once I really understand them and have demonstrated that I know the score.

Crossing lines, on the other hand…

My word for you is “Thankful”, because sometimes that’s everything. Your challenge is to narrow it down.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I feel similarly about rules. I mentioned in one of the comments above just now that my mama always says that you need to know your limits in order to blow past them into the limitless impossible possible. Thankful is a beautiful word and a favorite of mine. I am thankful you chose it, and thankful you chose to read, and thankful you chose to play… and thankful for your thoughtfully considered wishes. xo!

      1. I think you have a very, possibly limitlessly wise mamasaur. I’m glad you have her. I warm to her enormously, even through reading her instagram missives, and reading what you write about her. She’s grounded (I want to say ‘she reminds me of the earth’, but that might be a bit weird).

Thankful is one of my favourite words. I’m glad you’re thankful, and I’m thankful and delighted that you chose to have such a wonderful, fun game. I hope it brings very much joy and happiness. 🙂

  24. It’s not a birthday without CAKE, so that’s my word and my wish for you. Any kind you like – although for my birthday, which is in February, I like t0 make an extra little Christmas cake, baked to my grandmother’s recipe around Halloween and liberally dosed at intervals with brandy.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yum, cake! Thanks, Bella, this will be a fun word. What’s a Christmas cake? Like… a fruit cake? Are you a Pisces? Thank you for playing, for wording, and for wishing!

      1. Christmas cake where I come from is a very rich fruit cake. I will share the recipe when I bake it this year. Many Americans make a joke of the heavy fruit cake that gets passed from person to person over the years, being used as a doorstop in between … and mine is certainly heavy enough for that! But it is DEEELICIOUS.

  25. Rawr!
    Whee! fun 🙂
    My word is “Lighthouse.”
I am reusing it from a ho’opono’pono drumming getogether that was Friday fun, well mostly.

I’m embracing myself as a lighthouse.

Yes, it creates a funny picture in the head, but it’s doable.

I’ve never really been one for “rules,” or doing things the “blogging successful way” ~whatever that means. I’ve heard of tricks.. Like to ignore them. I’m pretty pleased with what’s been happening in my world, living as I do.👯 I feel really loved most of the time 😁 💕👌 I’m happy having some time leftover to make visits around the planet.✨🌏✨

    Me, sometimes:
Dadaism. Surrealism. Cubism. Randomness. Mixed mediA.
    Fan of kindness.✌🏽️

My consistency is also a product of my randomness…👤

Nice idea, by the way… but seriously one word?! 😀 You want me to choose one single word from … how many words are out there? wait, I have to google this … 1,025,109.8 (source: Languagemonitor.com).

    My word shall be: Unicorn!

And you can call me what ever your heart wishes ;).

I will be 65! I can get an official seniors’ card and get discounts and everything!
This is my most exclamation-marked comment ever!
Because I’ve reached my official senior, or golden, or elder years I choose the word golden. You know my name.
Blogging rules kinda scare me – every time I read them it feels as if I should do something about it, change the way my blog is constructed, write about the stuff that gets the most likes, do things differently from what I’m doing. Sigh. I just can’t. I have to follow my own path.
    much love

    1. Golden is the perfect word! I’m excited for your 65th! As to following our own path, it must be a starsign thing, or a blogger thing, because… no matter what rules I hear, I sort of just do what feels right, ha! 😀 Thank you for playing!!

  28. I love this idea. I am late to the game because I was moving but I am back! I break all the same rules you break. No niche. No SEO appropriate titles. I have decided I am a “recreational blogger” who blogs for the love of it and so far it has worked. Now for my word –teapot. Did anyone take that one yet? I didn’t see it so hopefully not!! If so you can double tag us! Fun project, Rara. Hugs!

There are blogging ‘rules’? Wait, what?!

Rara, I think about you every day, even though I have been less than faithful in reading/commenting of late. Going through a bit of a small crisis of my own at the moment. I’m trying to keep up, though. Your bravery and fortitude helps me more than you can know. Right now fireflies are my lucky charms.
