10 Bean Post

all beans, no cow

I am a prone to planting wild, tangled, bewitchingly-magic beanstalks.
That no one else can necessarily see.

Without intending to step into the overtold pages of a fairy tale, I become a child, palms open, cradling my fascination of ten enchanted beans.

They are worth more than a cow. They are worth more than the beanstalk they could grow.
They are so heavy in possibility, I hold them tightly within both hands.

I might plant one– or three. I may share one, bake one, throw one, or disperse them all along my pathway home. But what I do with these beans is meaningless compared to the Hope and Laughter they absorb into my heart, through my palms.

The point is, some non-human things make me happy, too.
I fall in love regularly and I going to share that love with you.

Periodically.
When the whim strikes.

Maybe they’ll feel like magic to you, too.
Or, maybe they’ll look very ordinary.

It doesn’t matter either way at this point.
The cow is long gone.

…. What do you mean you’ve never heard of Tribus Day?

Eli and I invented it a whole 20 hours ago.

I hope to be linking up my name right next to yours.Β  We all have at least 3 loves, right?Β  Right.

Would you rather have the cow, or the magic beans? Are you beans more apt to be sounds or sights? Ephemeral or everlasting? Big or small?

    1. Haha, YES! I laughed at that part, too… you know there’s too many LaLaLa’s when even the kid who turns your song into a YouTube music video is too lazy to write them all out. πŸ˜‰

  1. When asked, “If you could have only one type of food source if you were deserted on an island what would you pick?” I would always say a cow, that way I could have milk and cheese and yogurt etc. (especially cheeeeeeese!) You’re making me want beans….. πŸ™‚

    1. I love that your food-source-on-a-deserted-island comes up enough for you to have a stock answer. Your life sounds like it’s working just right. πŸ˜€

And yes, if you’re going to be on a deserted island, you NEED cheese.

Oh, a bean and cheese taco.
That’s what I want right now.

      1. Don’t think I could live without my nightcheese, but I have to admit I’ve been living on a crockpot of beans & saltines for the past two days. And look now I want to put sour cream on them, I’m so torn. Can we invent a BeanCow some how? Revise and add to Darwin’s “Origin of Species”, re-name it “Bean-Cheesiest of Species”?

        1. Between the two of us, I’m almost certain we could invent anything.
But Bean Cow sounds just… divine.

My house-niece recently said, “There should be burrito glue.” and I thought that was particularly genius, too… and related to this because it’s all categorized under my “Love of Tacos”.

          (Crockpots of beans = YES.)

    1. Go Team Bean!

Although I have to say, if it was between a magic bean and a magic cow… well, I don’t know which team I’d land on.

      Thanks for reading. πŸ˜€

  2. I love that picture of you and Dani! I wish I had one of those skirts. I’m always looking for long skirts but never finding ones that feel right … apart from a green velour one from Paris I bought while thrift shopping with Mom sometime in college. That one’s gone across the ocean and back with me twice. πŸ™‚

Thinking about TribusDay. Even the thinking of it makes me grin. I wonder which three I’ll choose!

    1. I know. It’s one of my favorites. I love how she is in the picture. Fully-present. Not too many people are ever that, and she always is. It’s beautiful.

I love long skirts that flow well on those of us with some hip. πŸ™‚ The company Idea2Lifestyle makes WONDERFUL SKIRTS. Sorry, but it was totally all caps deserving. Plus, you can put your measurements in if you don’t mind waiting a little longer. They’re on the $60+ end, but I literally wore the clothes I had from there until they wore through… which took forever and tons of rolls down hills.

I’m excited for Tribus, too! I have no idea what three I’m going to go with, but I have a feeling it’s going to be super awesome. ❀

      1. $60+ is so well worth it for something to be worn time and time again, including for hill-rolling sessions! I’m going to check them out.

I went to snap a picture of my skirt, but I couldn’t imagine getting one worth posting. Maybe one with me in it, after I’ve finally gotten it (re)hemmed? The good in seeking out the picture was finding D and A snuggled up together. I briefly considered that convergence for Tribus: a boy, his dad and a skirt, but I think I’ll probably only figure out my three for sure when I sit down to write. :p

        1. On Facebook, Matt and I talked about possibly posting multiple sets of threes. The possibilities are quite literally endless. I’m restricting myself by making it about blogging… but that only limits it to “nearly endless possibility” πŸ™‚

  3. I feel like this post IS a bean. How your words strike me and the way you put all of these lovely things together is like the stalk growing as I read. And yet….I still have the bean, even though the beauty grew out of it.

    1. Thank you, Colleen… I feel the same way about the comments. Yours is a wondrous post in and of itself… beautiful! We’re lucky to be surrounded by hundreds of magic beans! πŸ™‚

  4. This list is so perfect. I wonder if I should participate in your new holiday…
It’s not like me to play well with others you know. But that can be boring sometimes so maybe I needs to live a better story too. So much to think about, I’ll just flip a coin. Heads or tails?

If you handled being a poblano for more than a day, then you can handle celebrating Tribus with us. What’s a totally-made-up holiday without an echo?

          1. If it is I’m not a part of it, no connection with that place, neither love nor hate, but I wouldn’t want to live so far from my ocean. When I saw the Pacific for the first time I felt queasy, I knew it wasn’t my ocean. I’m a man of the Atlantic.
I suppose I can try something but I doubt it will be as grand as being a problemo. Especially since I don’t think I have time to set up the computer I disassembled recently. The things I do for stars.

            1. You’re right, celebrating Tribus will be nothing compared to being a pepper again this year. (See what I did there? *adds Echo to the list of Poblanos*)

I remember seeing the Atlantic for the first time and thinking… “what is this ocean think it’s doing? being so wrong.” πŸ˜‰

I’m sure this is enough notice to get stuff together for this year’s festivities. I’ll even come up with themes or something like that but less logical. Yes.

      1. You need cows to get beans, that was the point of the story, beans are the special things most can’t see their potential you must give up your cows and take a risk. But if no cows, how would you get beans?

  5. I’ll have a cow, man. I don’t really trust in anything magical, least of all beans (you eat them like you would a normal food, and then, and hour later, they take their revenge on you and everyone around you). Actually, I don’t trust cows, either, but not as much as I don’t trust magic and beans.

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Haha, good grief, what DO you trust? Cows and magic and beans seem almost entirely harmless to me… but of course, I trust pretty much everything and everyone to a decent extent. I 100% trust very few, but I 100% very few things in general… hmmm, I don’t even remember where I was going with this thought.

  6. I love that skirt and would wear it year-round!

That pic of you and Dani is beautiful, so many emotions there. Love, friendship, humor, togetherness, awareness πŸ™‚

No offense to your taste buds, and I know you probably won’t eat these because ofthe sugar, but the only “real” jujubes to me are the ones that are made by the same company that makes JujyFruit.

    1. The skirt is fantastic! They make one with these red-lined pockets, too… and it’s equally brilliant. What I love about them is how they flow without clinging. I don’t like to feel like I’m wearing a box, but I don’t think everyone needs to see my rolls. It’s out of my price range for new clothes right now, but one day…

And, thank you– Noelle is such a gifted photographer. She always captures things that I barely saw.

As to sugar, I’ve been eating more than I should… hence my terrible skin breakouts and my impressive 30 lb weight gain in 70 days of freedom (yikes!). If I feel sugar-crave-y, I’ll hunt down these jujyfruit jujubes just so I’ll know. πŸ™‚

  7. Um…what kind of surprise, Dad? What’s that shovel for?
Hah! Creepy children’s book strikes again! Did you see the one I posted: “v is for (windowless abduction) van that drives far away” …?!? What the what!!

Still trying to select my three for tribus day… I’ll figure it out today so I can get it all set for tomorrow. Anyway, have a great day.

    1. Haha, yes, the V van is terrible. πŸ™‚ In this case, the surprise was that they were going to make a dog out of sand on the beach because they brought the dog to the beach even though it wasn’t allowed, so mom had to go walk him somewhere else while everyone played. So they decided a giant sand dog would help? Kids books are weird.

My three, gah! I don’t even know. I think I’ll post whatever I come up with at the moment, and then tweet my next best bets all day.

      (P.S. I didn’t run away. Thank you. <3)

That’s a good plan to tweet all the things that might have made the list if you’d thought of them sooner. I might have to do the same. In the meantime, however, the cursor is blinking on the blank page…

  8. Who cares about the cow, I’ve been feeling as if I have all the beans ever since we started being nomadic and travelling four years ago. Everything is magic. It must be the beans in my hands. But only you Ra could express it that way. I think you are one of the magic beans πŸ™‚

    1. Hurrrrah! I’m excited to have participants for Tribus… and not just because it refuels my short list of people to contact when I come up with ridiculous games and bloghop type things. πŸ˜€ Also because– holidays, yay!

You’re totally right about the impracticality of carrying cows, by the way. It’s a very good point. πŸ™‚

        1. Haha, actually, I thought specifically of you when I wrote this. I went from writing “magic beans” to thinking of that children’s rhyme, “beans, beans, the magic fruit, the more you eat, the more you …”

And then, because I’ve never met anyone who could write about farts more eloquently, charmingly, heart-squeezingly, hilariously, disturbingly-descriptively as you, well…

I thought of you, and that’s when I decided that magic beans would not result in normal farts.
